Hey guys, how is it going? We are back in Fallout and today I’ve got something pretty cool to show you. So we’re gonna take a look at the power system in Fallout and you know, you may have looked at this and you might have been a little confused, but it’s actually really, really easy to work with and I’m surprised by how robust it is. There’s a lot of stuff you can do with it and it’s pretty fun to play with! Okay, so we’re gonna start simple, now if you wanna power a power mechanism to start working, you’re gonna need two things: First, you’re gonna need a device that requires power and on the other end you need a device that gives off power. So on this very basic example, we will place down a generator, right here. This generates power. And on the other end, we’re gonna put down a light box, now a light box is essentially a lamp, it will basically emit some light when it’s powered and it’s pretty easy to do. We’re almost done here, but the next thing we need to do is hook these two things together so the power can travel to this device.

How do we do this? You just hover over one of the devices and press space (this will be different if you’re on a different platform, this is PC, but it should be listed on your menu). But when you’re in ‘wire mode’ (you can see you’ve got some wire here), objects that can be powered will be highlighted white, so all you have to do is hover over it, it should snap to it, you can press space and it will light up. So you can actually turn the generator on and off and as you can see, the lamp will turn on and off accordingly.

Okay, so with that understood, let’s move onto ‘power consumption’.Now if we hover over the generator you can see that it says, “produces 3 sparks” and if we hover over one of the light boxes it says, “requires 1 spark”. Now these sparks are essentially just units of energy and it’s pretty easy to understand; this generator can supply 3 units of energy worth of power. So if we actually hook all these lamps up together(so we just attach the wires like so), you’ll actually notice that the final lamp, the final light box doesn’t really work and that’s simply because the generator doesn’t have any more energy to give, because this requires 1, this requires another 1 and this one requires a third unit of energy, this produces 3 units of energy, but all of these total require 4, so the last one doesn’t get powered. Right, so the next concept you wanna get to grips with is the ‘power grid’, now the funny thing is that we’ve actually already been looking at the power grid throughout this entire video.

A power grid is essentially just a combination of devices that have all been hooked up via wire, so this thing right here counts as a power grid. So we’ve got the generator and 4 light boxes all interconnected with wire, so a power grid. So that’s one power grid and over here you can see we have this beastly generator and another light box and this counts as a second power grid.

Now, why are we talking about power grids? Well the thing with power grids is essentially, anything connected to a power grid can tap into any energy provided by the power grid. Example is that this produces 3 units of energy, but requires 4. because there’s only 3 units of energy in the power grid, but if we were to do something like connect this generator up to this generator, basically combining the first power grid to the second power grid, you can see that all of these lights are now powered and that’s because this has become one power grid and there is now 3 plus 10 power at the disposal, but it’s only consuming 5 of those units of energy.

Good, so we now understand power, power consumption and power grids now let’s take a look at some of the other devices that you’ll be using. So, problem number one: You place a device that’s too far away from another device and they can’t connect. So if I try to connect this generator to this light box over here you’ll see that the wire is red, that means it can’t actually place because it’s too far away, how do we solve this issue? This is actually very, very easy all you have to do is go into the connectors and switches and use something called a ‘power pylon’ and the power pylon is basically just a medium between two device, it basically just let’s you extend the wire further than it would normally go. So we can just take this, connect it to the power pylon like so and then connect the power pylon to the light source, like so. And you see it works exactly the same.

Right so problem number two, we are now inside a house in close quarters and we don’t really have room to place a pylon down in here, how are we extend the signal when we need to? For example, we have the generator over here in this closet and we have a light box over here, but if we try to connect these two together, via a wire, it’s not gonna work because it has to go through a wall and that isn’t allowed. So how do we solve this problem? Now there’s actually another type of medium called the ‘power conduit’ which will actually act pretty much the same as a pylon except it can be placed on the walls, the ceiling and on the floor. So for example, we could just place this over here maybe and then we can just hook it up here, like so.

Then we can take the conduit and attach it to the light box over here and now we can actually get power in these close quarters. Okay so the next device is pretty cool, it’s called ‘the switch’ and it kinda acts a little bit like a filter. So let me show you it in action, so if we just place one down on this dog house and connect all of these light boxes up to one another, so you just connect that to the switch, connect the switch to this other light box and as you can see it kinda functions pretty much the same, but here’s the thing the switch can actually be toggled on and off, so if I turn this off, you’ll see that the power beyond the switch actually no longer continues.

But if turn it back on, you can see that it turns back on, so it’s a pretty nice thing to stop power travelling through a certain point, but as you can see this one over here continues to be powered regardless and that is because it is in the grid before the switch. Okay so the next device is also pretty cool, it’s called ‘the pressure plate’ and it does exactly what you think it does, now this is actually very similar to the switch, but it works a little bit differently at the same time. So, let’s just place this down. We do need to power it as well, it doesn’t consume power, but it does require to be connected very much like the switch, so let’s just hook all these up together like so and the difference is, as you can expect, is that the pressure plate actually responds to player presence. So let me give you a demonstration of that, so if I walk onto the pressure plate the light will turn on, step off light turns off, now interestingly this also work for things like items, so if we just pick this up and try to place it onto the pressure plate, you’ll see the light turns on, lift it up turns off.

Light goes on. Light goes off. Light goes on. Light goes off. Pretty interesting. Now these next devices are the things that actually surprised me because I didn’t think this game would have any logic in it, but apparently it does, so it’s actually pretty similar to redstone, so let’s take a look at the first thing and the first thing is called the ‘interval switch’ and the interval switch is essentially a clock, it will actually pulse different signals on and off and it’s actually pretty cool, so let’s take a look at that.

If we actually turn it on and off, you can see that it turns off for a little bit and then it will turn on for a little bit and again in a few more pulses it will turn off again. The next device is called ‘the delayed off switch’, there’s actually two variations, there’s the delayed off switch and the delayed on switch, but we’re gonna look at the delayed off switch. This is actually really, really simple, basically all it is, is if you activate it it will turn the signal on and after a short delay it will turn off, so if we try that again: Turn it on and after a short delay it will automatically turn off, so it’s not instant.

So the one I’m gonna show you now is probably one of my favourite ones, it’s called ‘the power counter’ and essentially it’s a power counter, it will actually count the number of pulses that have been put into it and it will output a signal once that number has been met. So let’s give an example of this: So, let’s put down something like a pressure plate first, just so we can demonstrate this. And then we’ll put down one of these power counters over here. And then let’s just connect all of these up to one another. Now if you actually look at the power counter, you’ll actually notice that there’s a little counter to indicate where you’re up to. So I don’t actually know what this is set to, but if I just step onto this, you’ll see that the counter goes up, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, there you go.

So once it reaches the required number it will reset and transmit power, so that’s actually very powerful. So there are more devices that I’m not gonna show today, but there is one final device that is very important to be used with other devices and that is called; ‘the terminal’, so this is essentially a computer and what it let’s you do is it lets you customize attributes of certain other devices in the same power grid. So let’s hook this up to the generator and I’ll show you what I mean. So, for example this counter counts 10, but let’s say we want it to count to 3 instead. What we can actually do is go into the terminal and we can actually customize that to your liking. So for example we go for ‘power counter control’ and you can just that to whatever you want, so for example you can set it to count to 3, like we said and we can exit out of the terminal and give it a shot. So if I turn the generator on and off, so on and off, on and off, you can see that the counter is counting that.

It will count to the set number and reset. That can be used in conjunction with other devices, for example the light box and other switches. Very, very powerful and not something to forget.
