Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC: rumors, datamines and everything we know

Rockstar has kept us waiting when it comes to news on Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to PC. This feels familiar, after the long, year-plus wait for GTA 5. RDR2 has launched on consoles, and Red Dead Online has launched too%u2014it’s inarguably one of the defining games of its era, particularly in the creation of its world. If Red Dead Redemption 2 is destined to come to PC, we’re probably going to hear about it in 2019.

There’s no official news yet, but there are reasons to be hopeful about RDR2 coming to PC. Shortly after the game’s console launch, the official companion app was apparently datamined, and it strongly points towards Red Dead Redemption 2’s eventual release on PC, with suggested graphics options and more.This remains the best evidence yet that the game will arrive on PC%u2014

Players hungry for a high-spec or 4K experience can opt to play the game on the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, but there’s nothing quite like a souped-up PC rig to bring out the finer details and see what Rockstar’s game engine can really do.

So if you don’t have a console from Sony or Microsoft, what are your prospects for getting Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC any time soon? We’ve run through all the latest rumors pointing to a PC release, and made our best guess as to when we’d expect it to land.

Rumors kicked off in mid-October about a possible Red Dead Redemption 2 PC release, after the online retailer MediaMarkt listed a PC version of the game on its website, with a placeholder date of December 31, 2019. The listing has since been pulled, however.

In terms of official information it%u2019s been radio silence when it comes to a PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. It has neither been ruled out, nor confirmed. We%u2019ve contactedRockstarin the past for confirmation, but all our efforts have been to no avail.

The last game came out in 2010 on PS3 and Xbox One, and those system’s custom architectures were notorious for being hard to port to PC. The PS4 and Xbox One use the same x86-64 instruction sets as AMD and Intel PC processors, so bringing Red Dead Redemption 2 is a lot easier to port than its predecessor in theory.

GTAV took a year and a half to release for PC after its initial debut on PS3 and Xbox One. However, this could be because Rockstar was working on porting GTAV to PS4, Xbox One, and PC simultaneously. Without having to worry about bringing the game over from last-gen consoles Red Dead Redemption 2 might show up a lot sooner after its console release if it doesn’t come out at the same time that is.

That said, releasing Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC might be something that Take-Two will be looking at more intently in the coming months. As big of a success as Red Dead Redemption 2 was and is, Red Dead Online is causing the company some problems. The player base is flaky, so Take-Two can’t report particularly strong numbers, and the mode has kicked up some controversy over content and monetization.

While players have expressed frustrations with the online mode, it is important to remember that Red Dead Online is still in beta phase and that many of its features will be tweaked, and more content is on the way.
