Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) Buying Guide By: phdoflynn

There is always a lot of confusion for new players, and some veteran players, when it comes to purchasing the correct version of the game now that the new Expansion preorders have gone live. I am hoping that this guide will help those players in need. I will list difference scenarios below; find which one is applicable to your situation.

I am a new player looking to get into FFXIV:

Welcome! Step one, I recommend all new players attempt the completely free trial before they commit to purchasing the game. That is what it is there for. The Free Trial includes the majority of the content from the original game, called “A Realm Reborn” and the first expansion, called “Heavensward”. Here are the links and starting points for your journey:

North America – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/na/

Brazil – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/br/

Latin America – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/latam/

Germany – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/de/

United Kingdom – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/gb/

Spain – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/es/

France – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/fr/

Italy – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/it/

Japan – https://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/freetrial/

Australia – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/au/

New Zealand – https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/nz/

Now, you are going to want to follow the instructions through those links. Take into account, your choice of which region you choose to create your account on, NA versus EU versus JP, will determine which region you will have to purchase the game moving forward if you decide to subscribe to the game after having fun with the free trial. If you create an EU account (Germany, etc) you will have to purchase the game from the EU market. This doesnt mean you cant decide to play on a NA server, it is simply for purchase of the game and future expansion plus where you buy subscription game time cards if you do not use a credit card or other payment method for your region.

There is a lot of information to process. Take you time. There is literally hundreds of hours of gameplay possible using only the Free Trial. There will be some restrictions and limitations on what you can do but that is detailed on the signup page.

Something to take into consideration. The regular PC version of the game and the Steam version of the game are incompatible. What does this mean? If you decide to start the free trial on the Steam version you are limited to buying the Steam version, and any future expansions, as the Steam version. Same applies to the regular PC version. There is no difference between the versions or the game using a particular version. If you go with the Steam version it means you can use your Steam wallet for payments. If you go the PC version, expansions are typically on sale more often. Typcially, most players suggest going with the regular PC version as its one less hassle than having to deal with a third party system.

I have signed up and played the Free Trial. I am ready to purchase the game and start my subscription. I need to buy it now and I cannot wait until the new expansion Endwalker releases in November! I have gotten through a lot of the content in the Free Trial or have finished up until the end of Heavesnward.

So, you have had some fun playing the Free Trial and now you want to purchase the game. You are itching to get into the new content and remove the restrictions that are around due to being on the free trial. You have heard that the new expansion Endwalker is releaseing in November but you really cannot wait!

Getting into the game from scratch, you will need to purchase the Complete Collection. Depending on which version of the trial you started on you will need to purchase the following. You do not have to purchase directly from SE but this gives you an idea on what to look for:

Regular PC Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/564956/final-fantasy-xiv-online-complete-edition-pc-download

Mac Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/564961/final-fantasy-xiv-online-complete-edition-mac-download

PS4/PS5 Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/565533/final-fantasy-xiv-online-complete-edition-ps4

Steam Version – https://store.steampowered.com/app/1016870/FINAL_FANTASY_XIV_Shadowbringers/

From here, when you want, you can purchase the Endwalker expansion when it is released to continue your journey.

I have signed up and played the Free Trial or I want to get right into the game without dealing with the Free Trial first. I am ready to purchase the game and start my subscription. I need to buy it now and I cannot wait until the new expansion Endwalker releases in November! I havent played much of the Free trial but I love this game! I do not think I will get to the end of the Free Trial before Endwalker releases in November.

So, you have had some fun playing the Free Trial and now you want to purchase the game. You are itching to get into the new content and remove the restrictions that are around due to being on the free trial. You have heard that the new expansion Endwalker is releaseing in November but you really cannot wait! You also haven’t played the Free Trial much and do not think you will get to the end of it anytime before Endwalker. Or maybe you just want to buy the game outright and want a small cost intro into the game.

Getting into the game from scratch, without having to dish out too much money, you will need to purchase the Starter Edition. Depending on which version of the trial you started on you will need to purchase the following. You do not have to purchase directly from SE but this gives you an idea on what to look for:

PC Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/444748/final-fantasy-xiv-online-starter-edition-pc-download

Mac Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/445814/final-fantasy-xiv-online-starter-edition-mac-download

PS4/PS5 Version – https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0082-CUSA00288_00-C000010000000000

Steam Version – https://store.steampowered.com/app/39210/FINAL_FANTASY_XIV_Online/

This version only includes the base game and the first Expansion, Heavesnward. This is the same content you would get from the Free Trial but having bought the game means you wont have to deal with any of the Free Trial restrictions. However, once you bought and subscribed to the game, you can never go back to the Free Trial on the same account even if you are still in the level range of the free trial.

I have signed up and played the Free Trial. I am ready to purchase the game and start my subscription. However, I can wait until the new expansion Endwalker releases in November!

You are still playing the Free Trial or have finished most of the content. You want to purchase the game but you are in no rush and really can wait until Endwalker releases in November. If that is the case, you could hold out for the updated Complete Collection**.** At this time if you bought the Complete collection as above, you would still need to buy the Endwalker expansion before or when it releases. However, if you can wait for a little bit after Endwalker releases, SE will eventually release an updated version of the Complete collection which would include the base game and ALL expansions including Endwalker. There is no linkf or this product yet as it would not be released until some time after the release of Endwalker.

I have the base game, the Starter Edition, but want to expand into the next expansions. I cannot wait until the new expansion Endwalker releases in November!

I understand, its a good game, and waiting 6 months or so is a long time. If this is you, there you are going to want to purchase the Shadowbringers Standard Edition. This version does not include the base game, which you will need first. However, it does include the second and third expansions, Stormblood and Shadowbringers. This version will get you up to all the current content in the game right before the release of Endwalker. You could also purchase the Shadowbriners Collector’s Edition if you want but the only difference is that you will get a few ingame items, such as a mount and minion. You can also choose to upgrade from the Standard Edition to the Digital Collector’s Edition at any time for a litte bit extra down the road if you want to wait.

PC Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/527395/final-fantasy-xiv-shadowbringers-standard-edition-pc-download

Mac Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/527402/final-fantasy-xiv-shadowbringers-standard-edition-mac-download

PS4/PS5 Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/527749/final-fantasy-xiv-shadowbringers-standard-edition-ps4

Steam Version – https://store.steampowered.com/app/1016870/FINAL_FANTASY_XIV_Shadowbringers/

From here, you can then move onto the Endwalkers Standard or Collector’s Edition once you are ready. That scenario would be fruther below.

I have the base game, the Starter Edition, but want to expand into the next expansions. I can hold back my excitment and wait until the new expansion Endwalker releases in November!

Patience is a virtue. If you have the Start Edition and can wait until November until the new expansion releases, then you are going to want to purchase the Endwalker Standard Edition. This version does not include the base game, which you will need first. However, it will include the second, third and upcoming expansion: Stormblood; Shadowbringers; and Endwalkers, respectively. Like above, you could also purchase the Endwalker Digital Collector’s Edition if you want but the only difference is that you will get a few ingame items, such as a mount and minion. You can also choose to upgrade from the Standard Edition to the Digital Collector’s Edition at any time for a litte bit extra down the road if you want to wait.

Mac Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/634271/final-fantasy-xiv-endwalker-standard-edition-mac-download

PS4/PS5 Version – https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0082-PPSA02954_00-C0EX04SET0000000

Steam Version – https://store.steampowered.com/app/1592500/FINAL_FANTASY_XIV_Endwalker/

Please note, starting with Endwalker, there is not a physcial game disc version. Even if you buy it in store it will be a digital code download.

I have everything up to and including Shadowbringers. I am ready to continue my adventure with the release of Endwalker in November.

At this point you have either bought the Complete Collection recently or have been current in buying the expansions as they have been released. There are technically three versions of the expansion you can buy at this time, the Endwalker Standard Edition, Endwalker Digital Collector’s Edition or the ultimate physical Endwalker Collector’s Edition. The Standard Edition is through the links below:

PC Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/634270/final-fantasy-xiv-endwalker-standard-edition-pc-download

Mac Version – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/634271/final-fantasy-xiv-endwalker-standard-edition-mac-download

PS4/PS5 Version – https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0082-PPSA02954_00-C0EX04SET0000000

Steam Version – https://store.steampowered.com/app/1592500/FINAL_FANTASY_XIV_Endwalker/

The ultimate physical Endwalker Collector’s Edition, which is around $200 USD comes with all the expansion release merchandise goodies and a copy of the Endwalker Digital Collector’s Edition.

There is some confusion this year as there is also a fourth option when looking at the Endwalker expansion products. This year, SE is also offering the ability to purchase all the merchandise goodies from the ultimate physical Collector’s edition, without having to buy the expansion itself. This is called the Endwalker Collector’s BOX**.** This version does NOT come with a copy of the expansion. You are only buying the physical merchandise from the release of the expansion. There is no difference between the buying ultimate physcial Endwalker Collector Edition OR if you buy the Endwalker Digital Collector’s Edition now then the Collector’s Box at a later date, you would get all the same items. So if you need to buy the expansion do not only buy the Endwalker Collector’s Box. Here is the link for the Box:

Collector’s Box – https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/634276/final-fantasy-xiv-endwalker-collector-s-box

I hope this helps some players. The game has been around for a while and with the different versions and scenarios it can be difficult to determine which version of the game you will need to purchase.

Remember, if you try and buy the Steam version you can never switch to teh regular PC version and vice versa. There really is not difference between them apart from additonal payment options through Steam or purchse options including sales. Also, once you decide to purchase ANY version of the game and start a subscription, you can NEVER go back to the Free trial on the same account. If you buy a version of the game and then unsubscribe afterwards but are still below the level 60 cap of the Free Trial, you will NOt be able to access your character(s) until you re-subscribe. You could also start a new Free Trial but you would have to set up a new account and start a brand new character all over again.
