Hi I’m BigWaifuSimp and today I’m writing this Ningguang DPS guide for no reason :]
I’ll go over detailed info on talents, constellations, gameplay, artifacts, weapon choices, and team comp ideas. It’s going to be a bit long so if you only want info on one of the sections I made them separate and easy to find. Hopefully this is helpful!
Much more popular than she used to be due to the 1.3 geo changes, Ningguang is now rightfully recognized as the op geo mommy she is. She easily competes as a DPS with some of the other favorites and is really fun to play if you like the mage fighting style. That being said, let’s look at her kit.
Ning’s normal attack does decent damage but, like Klee, her charged attack is where most of her DPS lies while waiting on cooldowns. The gems will home in on an enemy and do high impact damage from range. This makes fights a lot easier to survive than with other squishy characters thanks to the constant interrupts.
While it’s nice that Jade Screen blocks enemy projectiles (especially for a certain chamber on the 11th floor of abyss), the main use for it is dropping it in the enemy’s face. It does very good aoe geo damage for being on a short cooldown.
The big guns. It’s low energy cost makes it spammable and it does a ton of damage. The fact that you get bonus gems while screen is up also makes her whole kit fit nicely into a burst combo, but we’ll talk about that in a bit.
As you ascend Ningguang, you’ll unlock the passive talents.
This means you’ll never run into stamina issues from charged spamming.
More damage? Nice. This also fits right into her combo. Another benefit is that it works for your whole team, so if you wanna drop a meteor on some hilichurls you can get a nice 12% extra DMG.
This is a game changer for Ning. I’d definitely recommend trying to get her to at least C1 if you’re using her as your main damage dealer.
Opens up the opportunity for a lot more damage not only in the burst combo, but in all situations. You’ll have to play Ningguang for a bit to get used to the timing on this, but if you play it right it cuts your CD in half.
Adds a nice amount of damage to the burst combo.
There’s a few important things I’ve learned about Ning while maining her.
Normal Attack Animation Cancel
Like many characters, it’s optimal to animation cancel Ningguang’s normal attacks. Luckily it’s very simple and all you have to do is hold a direction while you’re attacking. Here’s a clip of what it looks like.
1st hilichurl is without animation cancel, 2nd is with
Normal/Charged Attack Rotation
Like I mentioned, you’ll want to weave in charged attacks to do the big boy damage. I’ve found the best rotation to be two normal attacks, one charged, repeat. You can fire off the charged attack right after the 2nd normal and it’s barely slower. Take a look.
Ideal Burst Combo with Constellations
Drop Jade Screen in the enemy’s face
Dash through the screen
If C6, charged attack (If you have C6 you get 7 jades after your burst)
If C2, drop another Jade Screen (C2 resets the CD if a screen breaks)
Imo the best option is 2 set Archaic Petra, 2 set Gladiator’s for the geo DMG and ATK bonuses.
If you’re running her as a burst/sub DPS, you could also consider 2 piece Noblesse with Archaic for the 20% bonus on Starshatter.
As a sidenote, I’ve seen people use Retracing Bolide on her. This isn’t quite as good because it does nothing for your skill or burst damage, which is a LOT of your damage. Regardless, if you get good rolls on a Bolide set and can’t seem to get any Archaic it’s still decent.
Timepiece – ATK %
Goblet – Geo DMG Bonus
Circlet – Crit rate/DMG depending on what you need
Like most DPS characters in general we want: crit rate > crit DMG > ATK %
Energy recharge is nice if you can get it, but with her burst cost being so low and the low CD on Jade Screen (especially with C2) it’s not necessary.
Everyone’s favorite topic! So what’s her best in slot? It’s Solar Pearl because it matches her outfit.
Jokes aside, especially for 4 star weapons the BiS is going to depend on your artifacts. If you need crit rate Solar Pearl is it. If you need crit DMG, Widsith is a good choice even with it’s effect being a bit RNG.
Others of note:
5 stars – Obviously these are the dream. Lost Prayer would be my choice for the crit rate and great effect, but any of them are going to outclass the 4 star alternatives.
Blackcliff Agate – Probably more obtainable for F2P than the craftables lmao. It has a crit DMG substat and the effect is okay too.
Frostbearer – It’s ATK% substat is nice along with it’s damage effect.
Eye of Perception – Not as good as Pearl or Widsith due to it’s lower base ATK, but still better than other options.
Twin Nephrite – If you’re still early game and have no 4 star options, this is the only 3 star catalyst with an offensive substat so this is the one you want.
Since the geo resonance buff, you’ll want to run a 2nd geo character for the damage bonus and geo resistance debuff. Since you need a shield for the resonance, you’ll either want a character with a shield ability or one that can enable consistent crystallize reactions.
This is the main team I use with Ningguang.
Fischl – stronk, used as a sub-DPS and crystallize enabler
Zhongli – now one of the best supports in game due to shield and debuff, plus he’s geo
Barbara – heals, thrilling tales ATK buff
Other characters to consider:
Geo characters – Noelle, Albedo, geo Traveler
Crystallize enablers – Mona, Xiangling, Xingqiu, Ganyu, Kaeya, Beidou
Shield abilities – Xinyan, Diona
SUCC – Venti, Sucrose
Bennett – He’s Bennett
That’s everything I could think of. Let me know if I missed anything!
