Hearthstone Big Demon Hunter – Analysis compared to normal Soul Fragment DH By: IgnorantBiased

Hey all, Norkcoaching back with a bit of a different post than normal. Typically each month I try to make a guide for whichever deck I hit legend with (this month being mainly Soul Fragment DH and Control Priest), but while deciding whether or not to do that guide this month I found a much more interesting concept for a piece.

Soul Fragment Demon Hunter has been a really popular deck as of late mainly due to its amazing turn 3 clear potential versus aggressive decks with Shardshatter Mystic and its incredible burst + healing with Aldrachi Warblades and Soulshard Lapidary + Twin Slice. From Bronze 10 to ~Diamond 2 I played 103 matches of this deck with a 62% winrate, and I feel with this sample I have a very good understanding of the deck and its matchups.

*Before moving on to the lists and data, all games for both variants of Big DH were done between 400-800 Legend on Oct 9th, 2020.*

Yesterday FunkiMonki on Twitter posted that they tried out Big Demon Hunter with this initial list and went 9-1 at Legend:

# 2x (1) Twin Slice

# 2x (2) Blade Dance

# 2x (2) Chaos Strike

# 2x (2) Manafeeder Panthara

# 2x (2) Soul Shear

# 2x (2) Wandmaker

# 2x (3) Aldrachi Warblades

# 1x (3) Frozen Shadoweaver

# 2x (3) Shardshatter Mystic

# 2x (4) Marrowslicer

# 2x (4) Raging Felscreamer

I was very excited to see someone else test this out, as I was in the process of trying this deck because I want very badly for Pit Commander to be a real card that sees play, so I instantly went to test the list out. My initial testing showed me that even with Raging Felscreamer cost reduction, playing out the 9 mana demons was insanely difficult, and even when I was able to the meta is very good at dealing with single large threats right now and so they didn’t have as much impact as I would have liked. The list just felt to slow, and it gave up one of the best early game minions in Soul Jailer which made it feel much more likely to get an early Shardshatter Mystic in the matchups where that matters.

Overall, I believe the list has potential but seemed to all-in on not a strong enough payoff of these big demons, and many of my wins came from scenarios where I didn’t even use the big demons and just won by the fact that I had Soul DH’s other strong aspects. However, one of the best feeling things was Raging Felscreamer into Imprisoned Antaen though, and so with my revised list I re-inserted Spirit Jailer and cut the clunkier demons (9 drops, 1 Priestess of Fury). With this change, I was able to also slot in an extra Frozen Shadoweaver which is incredible in the DH mirror but is definitely a tech slot if you decide to revise this list as well. The list I ended up on is as follows:

# 1x (1) Consume Magic

# 2x (1) Spirit Jailer

# 2x (1) Twin Slice

# 2x (2) Blade Dance

# 2x (2) Chaos Strike

# 2x (2) Manafeeder Panthara

# 2x (2) Soul Shear

# 2x (2) Wandmaker

# 2x (3) Aldrachi Warblades

# 2x (3) Frozen Shadoweaver

# 2x (3) Shardshatter Mystic

# 2x (4) Marrowslicer

# 2x (4) Raging Felscreamer

# 2x (5) Soulshard Lapidary

# 2x (6) Imprisoned Antaen

# 1x (7) Priestess of Fury

I believe that this list still maintains the best aspects of Soul Fragment DH normally, but has much higher payoffs for control match ups. This list ends up looking very similar to the normal DH list, but with a much different top end. I don’t miss Glaivebound Adept in most matchups, as it was best for burst when hit off of Skull of Guldan which is also missing in this list. The only other major change is losing Soulciologist, and while that hurts I do think it could easily be slotted in over that 2nd Frozen Shadoweaver from before. Overall, I haven’t done extensive enough testing with this different late game package to decide whether or not it should be the direction the deck goes in future, but it has been a very interesting journey and one I hope inspires you all to test too!

Thanks for reading, I try to be very active in my threads so if you have any questions, concerns, criticisms, etc let me know, and when its out make sure to check out the YouTube video on this subject!
