With patch 10.25, the “pings taking up 2 lines” bug was fixed, but the chat box and font size has shrunk, and the default maximum size is a bit small for my eyesight / monitor size.
However this can be fixed by changing the settings file directly. Strangely, editing the config file was originally how we got enlarged minimaps, which they removed in v10.23 and then added as an in-game feature in v10.24.
Presumably they’ll fix the chat box again next patch, but in case you don’t want to wait 2 weeks before they fix it (or however long if they hotfix it), you can edit the file yourself to get a gigantic chat box with larger text to reduce eye strain. Note that changing the chat size this way does not make pings overflow lines again.
How to make your chat box enormous:
Close the game client if it’s running.
Find your settings (
PersistedSettings.json) file; it should be in a folder in your League of Legends installation folder. Check these locations:
C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsConfigPersistedSettings.json
C:Program FilesRiot GamesLeague of LegendsConfigPersistedSettings.json
C:Program Files (x86)Riot GamesLeague of LegendsConfigPersistedSettings.json
According to PCGamingWiki, if your game runs in non-admin mode, the config file might be stored in
WINDOWS USERis your Windows user name):
C:UsersWINDOWS USERAppDataLocalVirtualStoreRiot GamesLeague of LegendsConfigPersistedSettings.json
C:UsersWINDOWS USERAppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram FilesRiot GamesLeague of LegendsConfigPersistedSettings.json
C:UsersWINDOWS USERAppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram Files (x86)Riot GamesLeague of LegendsConfigPersistedSettings.json
I also had another
PersistedSettings.jsonhere (I’m not sure why), but you may want to check the locations here if the other ones didn’t work:
C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsGameDATAcfgPersistedSettings.json
C:Program FilesRiot GamesLeague of LegendsGameDATAcfgPersistedSettings.json
C:Program Files (x86)Riot GamesLeague of LegendsGameDATAcfgPersistedSettings.json
Note that multiple of files may exist, so I recommending doing the next steps for all of them, just to be sure.
Alternatively, you can also figure out which single file is the right one to change by changing the chat scale slider in game to 0 and then saving, then check which single
PersistedSettings.jsonfile also changed its ChatScale setting to 0 (See step 5), which would be the correct file to edit. Remember to close your game before editing in step 6, or the file will reset to your current game settings when you close the game.
PersistedSettings.jsonand press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to create a copy (backup), just in case.
PersistedSettings.jsonin a text editor such as Notepad.
Press Ctrl+F to search and type
ChatScalein the search box and click Find. You should see something like this: https://i.imgur.com/TUp6fuM.png
Change the number in the
"value": "###"to something larger, for example
"value": "200", those same lines should look something like this: https://i.imgur.com/92nLAmU.png
Press Ctrl+S to save. 7b. If you have multiple files and didn’t single out which file was the correct one (in step 2), repeat steps 3-7 for each of them.
Make a custom/practice game to check if the chat size properly changed, and if you’re fine with the new size.
If something went wrong, you can restore the backup by closing your game, deleting
PersistedSettings.json, then renaming
PersistedSettings - Copy.json (or the backup’s name if you changed it) to
PersistedSettings.json. Make sure your game is closed when you do this, or the settings file will be overwritten when you close the game!
The note at the top of
PersistedSettings.json says it’s generated automatically, but editing this file worked for me to change the settings in game. Just make sure your game is closed before you edit it, or when you close the game, your changes to the file will be overwriten. That file also mentions
SettingsToPersist.json, and there is also a
game.cfg file, but I haven’t messed with either of those since editing
PersistedSettings.json worked for my game.
Here are some sample sizes (in 1920×1080 resolution):

By the way, if your chat box moved partially off screen, you can move it back to where you want by pressing enter in game, and then clicking and dragging the chat box to where you want it.
Also random PSA: you can switch the shop tabs (Recommended/All Items/Item Sets) with Ctrl+Tab. It can also be rebound in the settings under Hotkeys -> Item Shop. I’m not sure when they added this setting.
Hope this helps you all! It certainly helped my eyes.
