In this post, I will summarize the information I have been able to gather about all the mechanics in the new Companion Update. It may be expanded as new details emerge.

Adopting a Companion

In order to adopt a Companion, you simply walk up to an animal, feed it with a Creature Pellet, which can be crafted from Carbon, and interact with it. Advanced bait has been removed from the game. Also, you no longer have the recipe for Creature Bait from the start. Presumably, Hello Games doesn’t want you to have Companions right at the beginning of the game. I do not know how you obtain that recipe. Possibly from a Manufacturing Facility.

You can have up to six Companions. You start off with two Companion slots. The rest can be unlocked with Nanites. As is usual for this game, the price rises with each slot. The first one costs 500 Nanites, the second one 1,000, the third 5,000, and the fourth 10,000.

You cannot adopt Flying Creatures, Underwater Creatures, or Creatures that are too exotic (Jason from Jason Plays was able to adopt a meatball).

Interacting With Your Companion

A Companion can be summoned much like a Starship. It can even be summoned on the Anomaly, where it appears as a hologram. Only one Companion can be summoned at a time. While a Companion is summoned, its love and hunger meters deplete. These can be replenished through patting and feeding, respectively. Companions also have a Trust stat, which starts at 60% upon adoption. From my own experience, the Trust stat can be raised by 5% every 24 hours by filling the Companion’s love meter. I do not know how to lower the Trust stat, but I assume it’s by neglecting your Companion. The exact effect of the Trust stat is still unknown.


A Companion can be induced to lay an egg when the following conditions are met:

  • At least 24 hours have passed since the Companion was adopted or last laid an egg.

  • The Companion is on its home planet or a planet with the same atmosphere.

  • The love and hunger meters are not too low.

  • You own less than six eggs.

An egg can be hatched 24 hours after it was laid. Creatures seem to be born with 5% more trust than their parent has at the time.

Gene Sequencing

A Companion’s offspring will be almost entirely identical to its parent, unless the egg has been sequenced. An Egg Sequencer can be found on the Space Anomaly. It has four Catalyst slots: “Growth Hormone,” “Gene Splitter,” “Dye Injector,” and “Neural Calibrator.”

Each of these slots can be charged at one’s own discretion and has a maximum dose of 100%, except for the Gene Splitter, which has a maximum dose of 150%. The Gene Splitter manipulates a Creature’s Anatomy. If it has a dose of more than 100%, it is considered “overdosed,” resulting in an animal that looks very different from its parent.

The Catalyst slots can be filled with pretty much any item. The rarer an item is, the more potent it is, and the less of it you need to max out the dose.

You can make your Companion bigger or smaller or manipulate specific personality traits by putting certain things in the Growth Hormone and Neural Calibrator slots. A fully charged Growth Hormone slot will de- or increase the Creature’s size by half a meter. A fully charged Neural Calibrator slot will adjust one of the Creature’s personality traits by 20%.

A Companion has three personality traits that exist on a spectrum:

  • Industriousness goes from 100% playful to 100% helpful

  • Aggression goes from 100% gentle to 100% aggressive

  • Independence goes from 100% devoted to 100% independent

The Egg Sequencer also displays four Embryo Statuses: “Weight / Height,” “Anatomy,” “Colouring,” and “Personality.” These have four states that change as you put things in the Catalyst slots:

  • “Inherited” when a feature remains unchanged (either because there is nothing in the corresponding Catalyst slot or that trait is already maxed out)

  • “Unstable” when a feature is changed in an unquantifiable way (in the case of Anatomy and Colouring)

  • “Increasing” and “Decreasing” when a feature is changed in a quantifiable way (in the case of Weight / Height and Personality)

The same egg can be sequenced an unlimited amount of times.
